Celebrating the Unpopular Arts

On over-emulating people

A quick post I’m doing just to amuse myself.

There’s nothing wrong, I think, with having artists you look up to and try to emulate, but some people take it too far.

I once read a short story based on the idea of a writer in the future, who tried to emulate Mark Twain in every aspect of his life; he’d been born in a year Halley’s Comet visited; we pick up the story at Halley’s Comet’s next visit. You can guess what the writer’s gonna do.

One of my influences as a writer is Stephen King who, as we all know, was once hit by a van.

NSFW (or anywhere else) pic follows (me, shirtless) :

Don't do this.
I don’t know if you can see it, but I have scratches all up my right-hand side and up my arm in this picture.

This is not how to emulate your artistic heroes, people. Don’t do it.

I’m torn whether having the shirt off would have been so bright as to make it impossible not to see you, or if the driver would haven been blinded by all that whiteness.

So since it was a delivery van to Parliament, did anything spill out of the back of it? Are you at least going to get superpowers out of it?

Though you must already be superhuman to shrug off getting it by a truck like that!

Unfortunately, it was the end of the day, so all his official deliveries had been made. No secrets spilled.

I knew I should’ve used the other photo! (Made me look more tan… but the scrapes were less visible.) 🙂

It’s the second one: I already had superpowers. 😛

Seriously for a moment: the grey shirt I was wearing was hard-to-see, and it was a very, very rainy day. But, that said, my lights were on because it was that rainy. (He had seen me, he just thought I’d stopped for him, and I thought he’d stopped for me, and we were both wrong.)

Thanks, Fraser. It wasn’t actually going very fast – it’d just stopped to cross an intersection (and if it hadn’t, the accident wouldn’t have happened!) so it wasn’t too bad. I don’t even think my bike was damaged badly (I was riding at the time). I haven’t had a chance for a test ride yet.

My worst bike accident was when my wheel met a pot-hole of just the right size to seize it. No permanent damage but it was a week before my left leg or left arm would support me.

Ouch. That happened to me once – and it was a far worse accident than being hit by a van on Friday. It was kind of weird; I could stand and walk, even ride my bike and climb stairs, but I couldn’t run for months afterwards.

I had one hand that resisted clenching or turning things for months. I also had absolutely ghastly looking gashes on my arm for weeks—I used to joke about using them to pick up women: “Yes, it hurt — but I’d do it again if it would save an innocent child from a rabid St. Bernard.”

I noticed that, though I was wearing a helmet (by law here in Australia), I didn’t need it in this case – so I think I got off lucky.
I’ve figured out my scrapes and bruises were all from the van, not from the road.
