Celebrating the Unpopular Arts

20 Years of Blogging, a Retrospective (Part Two)

Now that I’ve dispensed with the non-comics portion of my blogging history, let’s check out the comics portion of it, which will have to be split up over several posts. Up first: the “What I Bought” columns I posted over the years! I began doing these on my personal blog, but when I began writing for Comics Should Be Good in March 2005, I naturally moved them over there. For years, I put these up the day of, the day after, or at worst two days after I bought a bunch of single issues on Wednesday, and as I was collecting them, I was kind of amazed that I had the time to do it! I always liked writing these, and I especially liked going “off-script” with weird stuff – some of which were appreciated by the commenters, some of which were definitely not appreciated! I started using images a lot, which means that a lot of the links I found through the Wayback Machine are corrupted and the images don’t appear. I apologize for that, but there’s nothing I can do. I used the Wayback Machine links because, of course, the comments appear, and back in the day, CSBG had a great comment section. As I’ve noted before, I very much appreciate the commenters here, and it was similar over there, except on a far bigger scale because we were more popular. Of course, we also have jerks in the comments section, but I have never been all that bothered by jerks! For most of these, I will just list the comics I reviewed in the post and the date I posted them, but for some, I will mention special stuff about them. I won’t always mention when a comics creator left a comment, but I always appreciated that, as most of them were pretty cool (even if I didn’t love their books). I did this with very few interruptions for about eight-and-a-half years, from October 2004 to March 2013, and then I changed things up a bit. I picked one book a week for a while and did a bit more of a deep dive, I came back and did the traditional column from November 2013 through the end of 2015 (although I didn’t post every week), and I did some more focused posts, with the DCYou initiative and then the DC Rebirth thing taking the place of the regular column. The columns got later and later, and these days, I can’t even imagine posting all those reviews (and the links to the creators’ sites, too!) with such a quick turnaround. I’m so old!

As with the first post, I certainly don’t expect you to click any of these links, but if you’re feeling nostalgic, feel free to check some out!

Oh, the famous TSSTG review. Tom Beland REALLY didn’t like it. He actually called Jonah and tried to get me “fired” (I didn’t really work for Jonah, not really), and I had a nice long phone conversation with Jonah about it (Jonah always had our backs, because Jonah was awesome). Read the comments to this post – they’re very entertaining! (And Beland did apologize to me the following summer at San Diego, so the last time I checked, we were good.) (6 October 2006)

Lots of fun comments defending Gail Simone and Darwyn Cooke! (19 July 2007)
25 July 2007. N/A. This one is weird. I can’t get to it on the Wayback Machine, and the CBR version simply doesn’t exist. Why not? What horrific thing did I write? Did I say that Our Former Dread Lord and Master wasn’t the greatest comics expert in the universe and he had it purged from the records? WE MAY NEVER KNOW!!!!
1 August 2007: Awakening #1, Chronicles of Wormwood #6, Elephantmen #10, Faker #2, World War Hulk #3, Killing Pickman #1, Metal Men #1, Ms. Marvel #18, Punisher #50, Red Star: Sword of Lies #2, Shark-Man #2, She-Hulk #20, Uncanny X-Men #489, Welcome to Tranquility #9. (2 August 2007)

Hey, Warren Ellis stops by and says something that, in retrospect, is … maybe not him lying, but probably not being entirely truthful, either. I do have a nice exchange with him a bit later, and there are a lot of comments because I dare denigrate Astonishing X-Men and I make comments about other countries’ political situations, which, as a mouth-breathing ‘Murican, I couldn’t possibly know anything about, so the comments are kind of fun! (23 August 2007)
29 August 2007: Batman Annual #1, Enigma Cipher #2, Ex Machina Masquerade Special, Fallen Angel #19, The Last Fantastic Four Story, Mice Templar #1, Local #10. Surprisingly, lots of comments about Australian slang! (30 August 2007)

I take a cheap shot at Francis Manapul, who stops by to rebut very politely, and I apologize. I really didn’t like his art on Iron and the Maiden, but some people showed some of his stuff from his web site, which was much better, and of course, he got a LOT better over the years (plus, the art on that book was supposed to be in a certain style, so I guess he nailed it, even though it’s not very good). I suck sometimes, but you already knew that! (7 September 2007)
12 September 2007: Bad Planet #3, Casanova #9, Cover Girl #5, Daredevil #100, Fables #65, Justice League of America Wedding Special, Lone Ranger #8, Moon Knight #12, Parade (With Fireworks) #1, Potter’s Field #1, Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag #1, Welcome to Tranquility #10, The Witness #1, X-Factor #23. Patrick Zircher stops by, and I rant about Colin Cowherd, because he’s kind of a tool! (21 September 2007)

(5 October 2007)
10 October 2007: Black Summer #3, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24, Simon Dark #1, StormWatch: Post Human Division #12, Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag #2, X-Factor #24. Sadly, no Wayback Machine link, so no comments! (11 October 2007)
17 October 2007. (18 October 2007) As the Wayback Machine is often wonky, this is what happens when you click on the link for this week’s post:

This sucks, but it happens. The post is supposed to be there, as this is what you see when you search under the “What I Bought” category:

See? There it is! I bring this up because usually, when you see a CBR link, it’s almost always because I get that first error message. However … for this post, there is no CBR link! What the heck? What happened? Beats me, but the CBR page skips right over it:

Which is annoying, because I have no idea what I bought that week. Plus, as you can see, someone left a snarky comment, presumably on the previous week’s entry (which also gave me that error message, hence the CBR link), and snarky comments are always fun, but we don’t get to see anything else about it. Plus, it looks like I very much enjoyed the comics, and there were a lot of comments! Grrr. Oh well. Let’s carry on!
24 October 2007: Blue Beetle #20, Casanova #10, Daredevil #101, Doktor Sleepless #3, Dominatrix #3, Foolkiller #1, Green Lantern Corps #17, Hack/Slash #5, Into the Dust #2, The Killer #5-6, Kong: King of Skull Island #0, The Lone Ranger #9, Moon Knight #13, Potter’s Field #2, She-Hulk #22, Thunderbolts #117, Velocity: Pilot Season #1, X-Men #204. Hey, Ed Brubaker thinks his Daredevil issue was very clear and that I’m not too smart! He may be right! But we have a nice discussion (what? on the internet?) and hash it out. I’ve never met Brubaker, but I’d like to, because he seems like an all right fellow. (26 October 2007)
31 October 2007. Action Comics #858, Crime Bible: Five Lessons of Blood #1, Daredevil Annual #1, Dynamo 5 #8, Infinite Halloween Special, Mouse Guard #2, The Secret History #3, Special Forces #1 (with the weird tale of my weird copy), True Story Swear to God #9 (yes, indeed!), Wasteland #13, X-Men: Messiah Complex #1. That’s the last issue of Young Liars, and interestingly (to me), as much as I liked it when it was coming out, when I re-read it about 18 months ago, it … was just fine. Nothing spectacular, like I thought when I first got it. I wonder what changed with me that made me think less of it. It’s still a decent series, but not as excellent as I thought back in 2009. (3 September 2009)

Back in the long-ago days, I didn’t realize that using alt-text would wreck the images in the future, so the images are gone. It doesn’t really matter too much usually because I don’t comment on the covers too much, but in this post, I showed a bunch of panels from Hercules #136, so go here to check them out! (15 October 2009)

Evan Dorkin stops by, Ed Brubaker takes me to task for always writing that Criminal isn’t re-inventing the wheel (fair point, in retrospect, even though I always loved the book), and Valeria calls Franklin the “r-word.” Oh dear. I wrote that I didn’t love it, but it wasn’t enough to make me hate the book (I was actually still enjoying the book at this time, although I soon dropped it), but apparently that was enough to piss some commenters off. It didn’t get as bad as the next time an issue came out (Hickman attempted to explain himself, and I didn’t love the explanation), but we’ll see that below. Who knew saying “Yeah, I didn’t love Val using a derogatory term” was enough to piss a lot of people off?!?!? (24 December 2009)

At that point in my life, I didn’t know who Rashida Jones was, and I wrote that I had watched Sullivan’s Travels, which I reviewed here not too long ago, believing I had never seen it. Odd. I still think the first issue of Scarlet is dumb, but the fact that a cop straight-up murdering someone they don’t like in public and getting away with it has become far more believable in the intervening years is depressing as fuck. Yep, it’s the post where I came to the attention of Marvel editors because I bashed Marvel editors, and Tom Brevoort did not like it one bit. Ok, maybe I was a bit mean to Marvel editors, but still – the fact that the same mistake in Fear Itself #1 gets repeated in later issues cracks me the hell up. You’d think they’d fix just that to placate the loudmouth asshole on the internet!!!! (7 April 2011)

This is the post with the adventures of Ardmore, Phil, No Balls Steve, and The Dozer. It was fun to write, but reviews were … mixed. Of course, the comment section got sidetracked by opinions about the perfect album, so there’s that! And 2011 Travis didn’t know who Aubrey Plaza was! (1 September 2011)
7 September 2011: Atomic Robo: The Ghost of Station X #1, Casanova: Avaritia #1, Kirby: Genesis #3, Thunderbolts #163, X-Factor #224.1. I read every single “nu52” DC comic! Oh, the comments!!!! (2 October 2011) (Here are the first appearances of every nu52 hero. Most of the scans are still good!)
5 October 2011: Action Comics #2, Casanova: Avaritia #2, Chew #21, Moriarty #5, Optic Nerve #12, Severed #3, Thunderbolts #164. After people made me feel bad about my “scathing” reviews of the nu52, I “introduced” my friend Ivan Hart Dominguez-Carson (no one ever said if they got the joke of his name), and things were much more positive! (6 October 2011)

DC Rebirth: Week Two: Action Comics #957, Aquaman, Detective Comics #934, The Flash, Wonder Woman. The nicer-looking version is here! I rant about the blog a bit, because we had just gotten new corporate overlords. Who knew how bad it would really get?!?!? (10 June 2016)

**********

Well, that was fun. Remember, this is Part One of my comics-writing odyssey. Sheesh! I hope you found some fun things to re-read or read for the first time. I had a lot of fun writing these over the years! Have a nice day!

Funny that history is repeating itself. πŸ™‚ Like your election column from 2004 the same can ne said about the price of comics.
Your complaint in your 10/20/2024 sounds like you wrote about prices just yesterday.

I like whining about prices! πŸ™‚ I think we passed the point of no return when single issues went over $2, which seemed to price them out of the range of casual or new readers. It seems like DC and Marvel pivoted from trying to get new readers to gouging old readers, and old readers obliged, so why not raise the prices? I get the need to increase prices due to costs, and that’s fine, but I doubt if they need to do it as much as they do. It’s still frustrating, even after 20 years!

20 years? More than 35 years.
    When I started reading/collecting the price was $ 0,75.
Concert tickets around $ 10. Last year I paid € 130 to see Rammstein
    Long live inflation
