As I blogged about back in September, a Legion of Superheroes fan named Kim Metzger hated Saturn Girl’s costume and submitted a redesign. The change immediately attracted a flood of suggestions for more costume makeovers.
As you can see, Duo Damsel’s look is one they’d eventually adopt in the series. The others did not catch on.
None of this second batch hit it.
Neither did these. But Dave Cockrum will start his brief but memorable run as Legion penciler next year and new looks would follow.
Paul Decker’s designs look like they were meant for hookers or strippers. Not that some of Dave Cockrum’s designs didn’t fall into similar territory.
No one wanted Shrinking Violet to be a damn hippie!
Yeah, Vi’s look would have become dated overnight.
I really like the redesign for Karate Kid’s outfit – it’s certainly better than the high-collar with swashbuckler boots get-up he wore later in the 1970s. The one for Cosmic Boy isn’t bad, except for that ridiculous ‘C’ on his chest. And the last one, Saturn Girl’s outfit with the jacket, is genuinely sharp, easily the best of the lot.
I’m a big Legion fan but I always thought Duo Damsel’s uniform changing when she split was dumb. She can’t surprise opponents by splitting or merging if her uniform gives it away.
I’d never thought of that but you’re right. Aesthetics won out over practicality.
