Daredevil #58-60 (Roy Thomas, Gene Colan) is a typical outing for the Man Without Fear. He’s up against the latest crime boss controlling the Big Apple mobs, the aptly named Crime-Wave, who has no (relation to the same-name villain team Captain America would battle about three years later (I’m surprised, given Roy’s fondness for continuity, there’s not even a reference to the Kingpin — “He was busted stealing the stone tablet — control is wide open!”).
Having revealed his identity to Karen Page in #57, Matt planned to hang up his identity as Daredevil and marry Karen. However Foggy is DA and he needs DD’s help to bring Crime-Wave to justice. In Part Three Daredevil, with the help of Foggy’s ex-con girlfriend Debby (thereby proving she’s reformed), exposes Crime-Wave as Foggy’s assistant DA, one of those “Huh, who’s that?” unmaskings. Before we get to the rip-the-mask-off Scooby Doo moment, however, there’s a lot of fighting. I thought this panel, in particular stood out.
On that note, have a great weekend.
I always thought ‘Mean Gene’ was the unsung hero of Marvel in the 70’s .
He never seemed to get the accolades of Kirby, Buscema or Adams but he was one of my favourites, his run on Tomb of Dracula was nothing short of incredible.
No argument. He was also great on Dr. Strange.
Brunner was such a hard act to follow on Doctor Strange, but Gene managed to pull it off and make the book his own.
He also drew the book from 172 through the end of the original run, pre-Brunner.
He and Marie Severin both do excellent work in the post-Ditko era.
