Celebrating the Unpopular Arts

20 Years of Blogging, a Retrospective (Part Three)

In Part Three, I want to look at my posts that deal with thoughts about comics. Some of these are quasi-reviews (these include the posts when I go page-by-page on certain “event” comics), but mostly they’re just things I wrote about comics in general. Some are just goofy, but I figured I’d include them anyway, and some are “controversial,” I suppose, and they inspired some superb comments threads. I don’t write too much like this anymore, just because I don’t keep up with comics news, so I don’t know what’s going on that might be controversial (I suppose I could write about a certain Sandman writer, but so many others have already done so, so I won’t) and therefore don’t write about it. So sad! I hope you enjoy these if you choose to check them out!

My “Best of the Rest” of 2005! The first time I gave a “Nuke LaLoosh” Award (for a talent who needed to be “called up” to the “big leagues” – this one went to Jacen Burrows, who took a long time to draw for the Big Two, but eventually did!) and, with Fell not quite reaching epic lateness yet, I gave a “Kevin Smith” Award to the comic that was technically still coming out but was sooooooper-late! (9 January 2006)

Answers to the panel contest! (23 May 2006)
I felt bad about myself, so I got petty with a quiz! I explain at the link, but basically – in my reviews of the “Infinite Crisis” events, I didn’t know that the Amazons used a “purple ray” and some dude on his LiveJournal claimed I couldn’t review comics because I didn’t know idiotic minutiae like that. I responded with a petty quiz about ridiculous comics minutiae that if you don’t know, you can’t review comics either! (27 June 2006)
Answers to the quiz! The comments in this post got a bit contentious, because in the post, I said I was annoyed that the LiveJournal guy called me a “r-word” (I use it in the post, but not here). A commenter took umbrage with my hypocrisy, thanks to the post I linked to above in which I satirized Frank Miller’s writing in All Star Batman and used the “r-word.” I explained that using it in satire and calling someone that are a bit different, but, this being the internet, the person didn’t want to hear. I told him I had said my piece and was now bored with it, which, of course, didn’t stop him! Yes, I took it a bit too personally, but man, what a bunch of douchebags. You should read the comments in this post – they’re something else. Two decades later, I kind of wish I had linked to the dude’s LiveJournal, even though it’s probably long gone, because on the off chance it’s not, it would have been fun to read his fulminating with the distance of time. Still, saying I can’t review comics because I don’t know about the Amazons’ purple healing ray? Really? (27 June 2006)
Reminiscing about Marvel’s “Year in Review” magazines. (11 July 2006)
A question for female comics readers! (12 July 2006)
Paradigm shifts in comics. Man, I like to bloviate, don’t I? And I reference Gerard Jones, which, like all references to Gerard Jones, hasn’t aged well! Also: lots of Ayn Rand talk in the comments! (23 July 2006)
Comic Book Urban Legends! I did a parody of Cronin’s long-running series. Well, I had fun with it! (The scans didn’t all transfer, so here’s the CBR version!) (6 August 2006)

Why people like Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home? Is this the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever written? I know there are many contenders, but this might be the winner. And yes, Alison Bechdel did find out about the existence of this post! Lots of good comments, as you might expect. (14 January 2007)
It’s a contest! Of course, all the images are corrupted, so check them out here even though, you know, the contest is no longer viable. (15 January 2007)
Here are the answers to my contest. Sadly, I can’t reach it on the Wayback Machine, so no comments! (24 January 2007)
How do we choose the comics we read? This has changed a bit – artists are slightly more important to me than writers these days – but not too much. Lots of good comments in this one! It led to Joe Rice’s column about art not being subjective, which was pretty much directed at me and has some great comments! (2 February 2007)

The Joker vs. V. I’m really mad that this isn’t on the Wayback Machine – there’s a huge gap in where you can enter during 2008, and it’s hard to track down everything – because of course this spurred some really cool comments. Dang it. I still like this post a lot. (10 August 2008)
This is still pretty funny, even though it’s about a nicer time, politically. (18 September 2008)

You’ll notice how the number of these slowly dwindled over the years. They did take a long time to write, and over the years, I just found less time to do them! Anyway, these often inspired so many fun comments, and I feel bad – as I note – when I couldn’t find them on the Wayback Machine, because the CBR versions don’t have comments. Dang it! I hope you enjoyed these, if you found some to click on. Have a nice day!

I decided to read the “The stupid saga of Saga #12.” on a whim. Oh boy those coments.

Tell me Greg, I know that you are a professional superstar blogger and all that, but how do you deal with the devastating blow of having lost commenters like “JamesE” that promised to never ever read you again?

    1. Greg Burgas

I always found it hilarious that people would say stuff like, “I’m never coming back!” I mean, too bad, but I obviously had a good-sized readership, so you’re probably in the minority so I’m not going to change for you, so why announce it? Even if I thought your concerns had merit and addressed them, you’re gone so you’ll never know!

A lot of the grumpiest comments came from people who didn’t read the blog. Occasionally Brian and Jonah would put a link on the main CBR page, and then we’d get the people who didn’t read the blog and were often just mean. Kelly got the worst of it, but Greg and I got some, too. It was devastating, though, it really was!

That Saga post was fun. I always hit a nerve writing about Saga!
